The Role of Sri Lankan Traditional Foods in a Balanced Diet

Sri Lanka has a rich culinary heritage with many traditional foods that are highly nutritious. In this article, we explore how staples like gotukola (Centella asiatica), mukunuwenna, jak fruit, and coconut can be intelligently incorporated into a modern balanced diet.
Gotukola, consumed as a salad or juice, is rich in antioxidants and has neuroprotective properties. Mukunuwenna provides iron and folate, essential for blood health. Jak fruit (breadfruit) is high in fibre and complex carbohydrates, providing sustained energy.
Coconut, often misunderstood, contains medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) that are metabolised differently from long-chain fats. When used in moderation as part of a balanced diet, coconut can support energy metabolism.
The key to a healthy Sri Lankan diet is balance, variety, and portion control — combining traditional wisdom with modern nutritional science.
